Missionary Ridge, referred to by Chattanoogans as "The Ridge," was the site of the Battle of Missionary Ridge in the American Civil War. It is on the crest of a prominent ridge that extends into Georgia and is less than three miles from downtown Chattanooga. Many plaques and monuments of the battle (some quite large) are displayed in small reservations as part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Some of this collection relating to the Battle of Missionary Ridge, including cannons, are in the yards of the residents of this affluent residential area. "The Ridge" separates the downtown area from the suburbs to the east.
